Welcome to all of our new subscribers, I'm glad you're here. To all of our old subscribers I'm glad you're here too!

Nine more days until Christmas....is everybody ready? Do you have all your shopping done? It's unbelievable how much stuff has to get done this time of year. It's no wonder that everyone is stressed out. And on top of everything, we're trying to make sure that we don't gain any weight.

This time of year it's a great success to just maintain your weight and if you happen to lose too, well that's all the better. Just don't pressure yourself by feeling you have to be absolutely perfect. You can try a few holiday goodies without feeling guilty... just stay in control and exercise a little more. Sometimes a small helping of what you crave will help you stay in control.

So go ahead enjoy the season. Have a cup of hot chocolate made with the mix featured in the recipe below. Add some no or low fat whipped topping and you have yourself a nice holiday treat. If you need extra help getting through the temptations of a holiday buffet, read the article this week on just that subject.

Easy Tip Of The Week:

It takes the brain approximately 20 minutes to tell the body that it is full. Therefore, if you eat slower or wait awhile before you decide to take more you are less likely to eat more than you need to.

Exercise

Walking is great for you. If you do it regularly and for long enough, walking can be just as beneficial as any of the more vigorous activities (like jogging etc).

  • Take a 10 minute walk, twice a day.
  • Gradually extend yourself each week by walking longer and faster.
  • Swing your arms at the same time.
  • Start walking up gentle slope, then steeper slopes as you become fitter.

A good goal to aim for is to walk briskly (swinging your arms) for 30 minutes, each day. This should include at least one reasonably steep slope.

Recipe

LOW FAT HOT CHOCOLATE MIX

1 (8 quart) package nonfat dry milk
1 (16 ounce) jar nondairy creamer
1 (16 ounce) package Nestle's Quik
7 teaspoons cocoa
1/2 cup Twin or 1 cup granulated sugar or Splenda

Mix thoroughly in a large container. Put in airtight container.

To serve, fill cup 1/2 full of mix and add boiling water. Stir.

 

CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES

1 1/4  cups all-purpose flour
1 1/4  cups whole-wheat flour
1        teaspoon baking soda
1/2     teaspoon salt
3/4     cup reduced-calorie stick margarine -- softened
2/3     cup sugar
2/3     cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/4     cup applesauce
1        teaspoon vanilla extract
1        large egg
1        large egg white
1/2     cup reduced-fat semisweet chocolate chips
          Cooking spray

Preheat oven to 350º.
Combine first 4 ingredients in a bowl; stir well. Set aside. Combine margarine and sugars in a large bowl; beat at medium speed of a mixer until light and fluffy. Add applesauce, vanilla, egg, and egg white; beat well. Add dry ingredients; beat at low speed until well-blended. Stir in chips.
Drop dough by level teaspoons, 1 inch apart, onto baking sheets coated with cooking spray. Bake at 350º for 12 minutes or until almost set. Remove from oven; let stand 2 to 3 minutes or until firm. Remove cookies from pans; let cool on wire racks.

Serving Size: 1 cookie -  55 calories each
